TNGC Community Bittorrent Network

Post by Firejack » Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:18 pm

Hosting large files is really expensive. Sure there are many free hosting sites but they are packed with adverts, complicated registrations, subscription fees or limits on transfers.
The solution to this I have for along time believe is Bittorrent. Many of, if not all, of you will of used it for downloading movies or music illegally and totally ignored the potential it offers for you to host your own files.
This is the idea behind the TNGC Community Bittorrent Network. Instead of needing expensive hosting to store all our downloads we are going to use Bittorrent to host our TNGC downloads for free, from our own machines 8)

Downloading on the TNGC Community Bittorrent Network
Highly recommend you use Azureus as your Bittorrent client. It makes downloading and hosting files really easy! You can use any Bittorrent client you prefer though.

To download the torrents simply visit the tracker http://firejack.plus.com:6969/ and click on the download you want. This will download a .torrent file to your computer that you can open it in your Bittorrent client to start the download.

Making the Network a success
In order for any Bittorrent network to be successful we need people to help distribute the file. This can either be people with the complete file acting as seeds (hosts) or peers (downloaders) downloading the file.
Two golden rules:
  • Even if a torrent is going slow. Do not disconnect as it will speed up when more people join bringing more bandwidth to the torrent. The faster you upload the faster you can download. If there is 1 seeder and 2 peers in a torrent. The seeder will upload part of the file to each peer so they can download the data they are missing from both the seeder and peer at the same time increasing speed!
  • Do not close the torrent once its complete. Keeping your Bittorrent client seeding whenever your computer is online will ensure other people can download the file others originally helped you download.
Azureus can be started automatically when your computer starts and help seed/complete downloads.
  • Goto START >> PROGRAMS FILES
  • Right Click on the Azureus folder and click Open
  • Copy the Azureus shortcut file
  • Press UP and select the Startup folder
  • Paste the shortcut there.
  • Open Azureus and goto OPTIONS >> INTERFACE >> START and check the minimize on start option
Hosting on the TNGC Community Bittorrent Network

Please only host relevant files. I'll remove everything else

Individual files smaller then 50 MB (excluding pictures that can be hosted on the TNGC portal)
For smaller files these can be hosted quickly on my home server.
Instructions:
  • Open http://firejack.plus.com:6969/
  • Goto UPLOAD A FILE in the top right corner
  • Enter the path to the file to upload
  • Select a Category
  • Enter a comment. Try to make this useful such as "TNGC Promotional Video by Aveox" Adding a name is very important incase I need to contact you!
  • Press "Submit". A progress window will appear that you can close once its done.
For large files or directory's
With this files they are going to be too big for me to host on my home server alone. So we'll need people to help host them with me. Note: This guide is for Azureus.
  • Navigate to FILES >> NEW TORRENT
    Image
  • Select the Use External Tracker radio button and enter "http://firejack.plus.com:6969/announce"
  • Select the Single File or Directory radio button depending on the type of torrent you are creating.
  • Enter a Comment.. Remember your name! (unlike I did in the screenshot ;) )
  • Press NEXT
  • Enter the filepath to the file or directory you want to create the torrent of.
  • Press NEXT
  • Check the Open torrent for seeding when done
    Image
  • Press FINISH. The torrent will be created and you will start seeding (hosting) the file.
    http://www.thetngc.org.uk/files/screens ... rrent3.JPG
  • Now goto http://firejack.plus.com:6969/
  • Click the link to UPLOAD A FILE in the top right
  • Enter the filepath of the .torrent file you just created. (Default is c:\torrents)
  • Select a Category
  • Press SUBMIT
  • This will automatically start uploading the file to my server so it helps seed the file also

only thing I don't agree with you here is this part
Highly recommend you use Azureus as your Bittorrent client. It makes downloading and hosting files really easy!
it slows your comp
there are clients that are easier to use and doesn't slow your comp

I'd recommend µTorrent

but since you made that guide for Azureus then it would be smarter go for that if you are unfamiliar with bittorrent clients

I use Azureus and cant really sense that my computer is slower when i run it
I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night.
I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright.
I kill two dwarves in time of peace, and two in time of war.
I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more

And no, I don't hate dwarfs (got a dwarf paladin myself). I just think its funny :)

Azureus really eats alot of comp resources, written in java :D Anyway Id recommend Bitcomet if you want something that wont slow your computer down to much.

On the plus side Azureus has tons of featuers and FJ made a guide about it, although should be similiar in most clients.

I like Azureus a lot because it runs perfectly on Linux from the command line. The Tracker and webpage are Azureus also.

Any Bittorrent client works though.

Nice work. But i hope more ppl will dl and seed cause im trying to dl sw_2years for a test, and avg dl-speed so far is 8,5 kb/sec.
Maybe you should point that out in your guide, that its important to seed after you dl stuff. Maybe im spoiled, but im used to speed around 400kb/sec when dl from like Piratbay (topspeed so far 1,3Mb/sec).

The reason that is so slow is I restrict the amount of bandwidth Bittorrent uses in the evening so it doesnt effect my gaming. We do need more people to seed though.. Ill add that to the guide.

ill help seed this stuff.. just have to dl it first then..
dont expect to dl from me during raids though, but outside em its almost always on 50-80kb/sec
my pc has low ram etc, but this doesnt lag me at all outside raids while playing, during raids i just get more carefull to reduce any spikes :)

btw arros, add your livesets etc to this.. wanna hear your work ;)

The maximum for my connection is about 56KB/sec upstream. Between 9am and 4pm I limit this to 25KB/sec, 10KB/sec between 4pm and midnight, 50KB/sec between midnight and 9am.
Need to limit my connection to these speeds so it doesn't interfere with my gaming. Won't be a problem we we have lots of people seeding 8)
