Server Problems

Seems the web server is playing up again today. Had several timeouts this afternoon. Just looked on the server status page and I see this
Server Load 14.98 (4 cpus)
That can't be good. Wonder what the heck is going on?

Ok new all time record: Server Load 167.54 (4 cpus)! (4.00 is 100% usage ;) )

Posted a message on our hosts forums. Hopefully they can fix it or we can find others having the same problem.

Yes.

Our webhost is going to replace the SATA hard disk with a SAS 15k RPM drive this week. Seems the SATA hard disks don't last very long!

Whether this was related or not I'm not sure but a certain very important script at the core of the Portal and related services seems to have had its first few bytes chopped off. This resulted in some screwy looking gibberish appearing on the Portal and in the "TerraNovaGaming News" teaser insert on some of the forum profiles that you may have noticed this evening. This has now been fixed.

This was me. Seems I'm having some issues with Textpad (the text editor I'm using).

If you're missing the first two bytes of the file, it'll be the unicode parser chomping what it thinks are the header.

Nope, it was about a line and a half, cutting off the opening PHP tag and an opening comment marker which, obviously, confused the server no end. Blame it on the Packet Fairies.

I'm beginning to think its my FTP client (FTP Voyager) which is quite old now the version I have and I don't seem to be eligible for updates any more.
What makes me think its my FTP client is the FTP logs show a lot of reconnect or resume attempts. Even on smaller files.

Whats everyone else using for FTP these days?

In my day you typed FTP at the dos prompt, uphill both ways, in the snow, and YOU LIKED IT.
